Appliqué
is normally frustrating to learn. You are taught to watch your sewing machine
needle as it swings left and right; making sure that the right-swing falls off
the appliqué’s edge. It is impossible for your eyes to focus on something moving
so fast, so people have difficulty seeing. Generally people have assumed that
their eyesight might not be what it use to be-and seek the help of their sewing
machine dealer.
The dealers
usually recommend an Open-toe appliqué foot. An Open-toe appliqué foot is simply
a standard appliqué foot with the cross section in front of the zigzag opening
removed. This does help you see the area better, however the cross section on
the foot is designed to hold the fabric down so that the needle won’t lift it as
it raises out of the fabric. With this removed, you now are forced to hold the
fabric down and you still can’t see, because it’s not that your vision is bad or
that the opening in the foot is not large enough that makes it hard to see. The
reason you have difficulty seeing is because you can’t focus on the needle
moving so fast.
The Satinedge™ foot has a
wider zigzag opening than a standard
appliqué foot but still has the cross section in front of the zigzag opening.
You can see the appliqué’s edge easily as you sew and you don’t have to hold the
fabric down. But what makes it even better is that you don’t have to watch the
needle at all! In fact you’re not suppose to watch the needle with this foot!
When sewing a satin stitch on an appliqué, you will watch the guide pin on the
foot; making sure that-it rides just off the appliqué’s edge. Suddenly you will
have great eyesight again, because you’re watching something that is sitting
still rather than something that is moving.
| Invisible
Appliqué is a technique used generally for quilting, however it is also an
attractive technique for garments. If you have ever seen a quilt with a
non-geometrical shape like a heart and it looks as though it was sewn into a
heart shaped hole, you have seen invisible appliqué. After preparing your fabric
shapes for the appliqué process and the shape is ironed on, we sew it down using
a 1.0mm wide zigzag stitch. We also use invisible thread to insure that the stitch is invisible. For detailed
