CREATIVE FEET HELPFUL HINTS
Add these hints to your workbook.
  • When satin stitching, turning corners can be a "sticky situation". In other words, you might find that the foot will become stuck because it has trouble feeding over the thick body of thread that you have sewn. To eliminate this frustrating situation, increase your stitch length on all inside and outside turns and sew. Once you see the fabric is feeding, decrease your stitch length again. You will want to add this hint to all sections of the Creative Feet Technical Guide & Workbook where the satin stitch is used.
  • This hint was told to me by a customer and I regrettably neglected to write her name down when I told her that I would add it to the newsletter~I'm sorry . She said that she writes her machine settings and notes down on her fabric samples in case she doesn't have time to paste the sample into the workbook right away. She also uses plain muslin fabric for all of her samples so you can easily see the writing. If you use muslin you should spray-starch the fabric for all satin stitch techniques to keep it from puckering.
CREATIVE FEET TECHNIQUE
What should I call it?

Please help me give this technique a name. Email your suggestions by clicking here

This technique is not covered on the Creative Feet Techniques Instructional Video or in the Creative Feet Technical Guide & Workbook. So be sure to print this and add it to your workbook ~

Fabric preparation:
Stabilize the back fabric using SdSV stabilizer. Why? Because any other stabilizer will not stick to the fabric and then be washed away. Why can't we use a tear-away? because the stitch that we use to sew the beads on is too long and the thread will break as you attempt to tear it away.

Machine Settings (Step One)
Presser Foot to use:
Pearls 'N Piping
Presser Foot Pressure: Lightest setting
Thread Tension: 1 number less than normal
Stitch Pattern: Zigzag
Stitch Width: 4.0mm
Stitch Length: Between .30-1.00mm (start longer and then shorten until desired look is achieved.)
Needle to use: 80/12 H Universal needle
Needle Thread: High quality
Bobbin Thread: 100% nylon lingerie

Supplies needed

  • 1/8" Rat Tail satin cording or other cording that measures 1/8" and is smooth.

  • 1/8" or 2mm pearls or beads.
Directions Peel off release liner from SdSV stabilizer and adhere it to back of fabric.
    • Draw 1 line to help you guide your first row of stitching.
    • Set your sewing machine to the settings listed above.
    • Slide Rat tail cording under tunnel on foot bottom.
    • Turn hand wheel to see that your sewing machine needle clears the cord in both swings of the zigzag stitch and sew to end.

**If the needle doesn't clear, use the following methods to change the location of the trim beneath your sewing machine needle.
  • If you bought the foot and 2 feet were included in the package, change to the opposite foot.
  • Remove foot and slide clear washer on silver bar to opposite side of foot and re-attach.

    • Place presser foot down so that it touches the row of trim you just sewed on its left side.
    • Sew to end applying your finger as shown to keep your second row of stitching exactly the same distance away.
    • After sewing as many rows as you would like, set foot on top of 2 rows of stitching so that the tunnel is over space between stitches.

You will need to raise your presser foot bar higher than normal in order to place foot on top of rows stitched. To do this, pull up on presser foot bar and hold until you slide your fabric into position.

    • Slide up to 2 rows of 2mm beads or other decorative round trim beneath tunnel under foot.

This is the hardest part of the technique, but well-worth the effort. To make it easier do the following:

  • Wrap thread around all 3 trims, at end to hold them together and pull thread through from front to back.....

Once you have sewn press down on trim to make them lay flat. (if you want the trims to stay raised, use an increased tension on the needle thread and use the narrowest width you can, without striking beads as you sew.

Change your stitch length as follows:

  • 3.0mm long if using invisible thread because you don't want your stitches to show.
  • .70~1.0mm if you are using decorative thread, until the desired look is achieved.

****Make sure your pressure foot bar is all the way down! Failure to do so will cause looped stitches on back of fabric or jamming......

When complete you will have a solid section of 3-dimensional embellishment!

Change your thread colors and types to make major changes to this techniques appearance.

 Stabilizers

New stabilizers

  • BLACK SIA for use on medium to dark fabrics. SIA is the only 100% polyester fabric that tears like paper---it doesn't stretch, is permanent, yet tears away. We will be adding Clear SIA within the month of May in addition to the white and black colors we currently have available to you.
  • Kleer-Fuse is a clear iron-on tear-away stabilizer that is great for many things:
~Backing stretch fabrics for embroidery so your outline stitches will always line up properly.
~Cut in strips an use in place of a stay-stitch when sewing hems, zippers and hemming scarves. Iron on to remove bias, eliminate stretching and spreading of ALL fabric types until you tear it away!
~Use in-place of fusible interfacing for Invisible appliqué.
  • Fuse-n-Stick has been brought back! However it is better than ever because it is now clear and soft. Specially designed for standard appliqué and appliqué done using your machine's embroidery hoop!
~Trace designs for appliqué onto clear film.
~Iron on to back of fabric.
    ~Cut out shapes.
~Peel off backing, uncovering the adhesive backing.
~Stick your pieces on to your main fabric and reposition until perfect.
~Press using your iron for a permanent bond.
  • Clear SIA will release soon! Embroider and you see absolutely no sign that you stabilized your fabric!
~All orders placed for this until it is in-stock are pre-orders.
